Florida Keys Offshore Fishing
The Florida Keys offer some of the best offshore fishing action in the country. Due
to the location the Keys offer access to the both the Gulf Stream and the Gulf of
Mexico. Common species targeted in the deep blue water are Dolphin, Sailfish, wahoo, Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Black Fin Tuna, Triple tail, with some
King Mackerel thrown in too.
Most offshore fishing is done by trolling, trolling and looking for floating
debris. Fish congregate around weedlines and garbage floating in the water.
Pretty much the greatest thing to find is an old pallet floating out there,
but anything is worth checking out: rope tangles, barrels, tree limbs etc. Stuff
grows on the debris and the stuff provides shelter to little fish, so big fish swim
around looking to pick them off.
Offshore fishing can be pretty difficult for beginnners, except maybe in the
middle of dolphin season, when if you troll around enough you are almost bound
to hook into at least some schoolie dolphin. One thing is for sure: fishing offshore
you are going to burn a lot of gas.
